Gifted Algebra II
Mrs. Venable-Foster
This project is designed to stretch your understanding of quadratic functions. You will be working on several tasks that will help you understand how quadratic functions are used in the physics of the universe. This project will be graded using a rubric (see attached) covering different categories.
Out of This World!
Gravity's effect on the motion of a basketball or on all planets in our solar system can be described by a quadratic model.
Step 1: Answer the following questions.
1. Is the action of tossing a basketball upward at the beginning of a basketball game important?
2. Could it be done incorrectly?
3. How could it influence the outcome of a game?
4. What are the rules concerning a jump ball?
Step 2: Complete activities 1, 2, 3 on page 339 of your text book.
Step 3: Answer the following questions.
1. Discuss possible rule changes that might be required on different planets.
(ex. bigger courts, higher baskets, etc.)
Note: Presentation is VERY important. Be creative in how you complete the project. Make the project easy to understand. Use diagrams and graphs if necessary.
Due date: November 8, 2002 (Every day late will cost you 10 points on your overall score.)
